Practice is key. IMPORTANT - Please note test flight logs with a minimum of 10 practice flights are mandatory. Logs must record (6) aspects of the practice flight. Of these 6 categories, 3 must include: 1) rubber motor size, 2) number of turns on the motor at launch, and 3) flight time. Start thinking of a name for your plane(s).
USE 70 MINUS 6!!! IT IS CRA§Y AWESOMELY GOOD!!! IT IS LIKE A MINUTE AND A HALF OR SUMTHIN AWESOME LIKE THAT!!!//
Please see Glue Recommendation specified in Discussion points dated 5/31/2011.
STUDENTS ARE NOTALLOWED TO TAKE HOME GLUE, PINS OR EXACTO KNIVES unless a parent takes responsibility for transporting these supplied to and from school and supervising their use at home. Glues used on competition planes are specified in the instruction manual in the kit (model cement, such as Duco). It's not recommended to use other glues on competition plane because they are too heavy. If Super Glue (CA) is used for emergency repairs, set up quickly by using a "fixer" apply by a dropper. (spraying fixer is not recommended because it solidifies the Super Glue (CA) in the bottle).
When building at home, you are not alone. Whenever you are unsure - get a second (3rd, 4th, as many as it takes) opinion. Ask your parents, call a team mate, call the event parent volunteer or Mr. Emmi or Mrs. Brown. Let them know the step number you are on in the competition plane instructions and ask your question. Let the person you ask get back to you after they've had a chance to review the competition planes and consider your question. Good engineers get each step correct before going ahead with the build.
At different steps in the plans, your progress may be slow - that's ok - move ahead when you are confident you understand the instructions for any particular step. It's better to ask if there's a plan instruction you need help with.
Please "de-brief" on the discussion page by sharing the details of your "flight experience" at the State Sci Oly Tournament. This will help you with a "jumping off point" for continued construction and flight improvement and/or mentoring students who will follow you.
See discussion page for feedback from flying practice in BCS gym from Team Gold & Cloudbusters general info.
Keep reviewing flight tips materials (see links above). As you gain experience, each time you re-read these tips they will become more meaningful and clear to you.
